Dieser Fansong hat ganz klar die Europameisterschaft in Frankreich bestimmt. Auch wenn Irland seid gestern ausgeschieden ist, wird man den Song sicher noch öfters irgendwo hören, egal ob beim Fussball oder beim Handball. Abgewandelte Versionen wird es immer geben und alleine daran merkt man dann, dass hier jemand Kultstatus erreich hat.
Nachdem wir den Song eigentlich täglich 3x zu hören bekommen, haben wir nun auch mal nachgeforscht, wieso ausgerechnet ein Bankdrücker der nordirischen Nationalmannscht (kein Einsatz bei der EURO 2016) einen eigenen Song bekommt und mehrfach am Tag einfach mal so gefeiert wird. Die Antwort auf diese Frage klingt sehr banal und ist es auch. Der Fan Sean Kennedy hat Will Grigg, als er noch in der dritten englischen Liga bei Wigan Athletic spielte, einen Song zu dessen Torjägerkanone getextet. Zur Melodie des Liedes „Freed from Desire“ der Sängering Gala (1996). Einige Zeit später hat das House-Duo Blonde eine Version von „Will Grigg´s on fire“ veröffentlicht, die sofort die britischen Download Charts gestürmt hat. Seit diesem Moment ist Will Grigg und der Song über ihn nur noch Kult…
Wer jetzt noch eine ganz besondere Version des Kultsongs hören will, sollte sich das nächste Video noch reinziehen. Rauhbein Eric Cantona hat sich mit offenem Hemdchen auch an den Song gewagt…
